Handvo is a traditional healthy Gujarati cuisine made with different kinds of lentil and rice. It is a lentil vegetable mixed savory cake. But today we are making a fasting handvo in appe pan with some fasting ingredients. This fasting handvo appe recipe video shows how to make tasty and spicy and fasting appe at home. You can cook this new vrat special food in this fasting season as lunch, dinner.

These non-fried vrat special Appe are best for tea time snacks. Kids love it like anything so you can serve them as a lunch box recipe. It has very little oil so it’s healthy too.

This upvas special handvo recipe can be done in two different kinds of methods, one is deep fried and the other one is the appe pan method. In appe pan / paniyaram panvery, only a few drops of oil or ghee is used so it is very healthy. These farali appes are tasty, spicy, crispy & crunchy so that it will fill your hunger easily during fasting days. Shravan month is considered a holy month of the year to offer special prayers to Lord Shiva. Shravan (श्रावण मास) is also known as Sawan as well. People offer their special worships as well as do the fast to please God. Here I want to share an easy and quick fasting/falahari/upvas special recipe for the people who do vrat or upvas. During the fasting days, we eat vrat, upvas or farali recipes. This farali appe or fali hando can be served during ekadashi, pradosh vrat, Navratri, or in Shravan month.

Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes

Servings: 2 to 3 persons


For handvo appe batter making:-

Sama chawal / morayo – 1 cup
Sabudana – 1/4 cup
Grated bottle gourd – 1 cup
Curd – 1/2 cup
Roasted peanut powder – 4 tbsp
Finely chopped, washed coriander leaves – 1/4 cup
Ginger, green chili paste – 1 tsp
Asafoetida – a pinch
Garam masala powder – 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Salt to taste
Sugar – 1/2 tsp (optional)
Eno fruit salt blue – 1/4 tsp
Water – (if required) 1 to 2 tbsp

For handvo appe tempering/tadka :

Oil – 2 tbsp
Sesame seeds – 1 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Curry leaves some fresh

Vital Tips

Cook handvo on low to medium flame only otherwise it will burn. You can make this as a full handvo in a non-stick pan or Kadai too. you can make this as appe.

It can be served as a kid’s lunch box recipe, lunch, or as a dinner as it has nutritious value. Serve it with rice, roti or curd/buttermilk with some fasting wafers or chips.

Use fresh and tender vegetables for better results.
